Both today, with
the world at the edge of a cliff, and when the story of prince Hamlet first saw
the light at the hand of William Shakespeare four hundred years ago, the
promises to man, the lies that feed false hope, are on human lips. So, now as
in then, the uncomfortable presence of the non-conformist and indomitable
Danish prince becomes essential; especially when we talk about a literary menu
of a youth who barely understands the tides of the world they sail.
Captains Courageous ¡Ya a la venta!

In 1937, Metro Goldwyn Mayer produced Captains Courageous, one of those
adventure films that transcend time. Years after seeing it for the first time,
I decided to use the original story, the novel by the same name written by
Rudyard Kipling in 1896, for this small collection of children’s books. I
thought it would be a good idea to adapt the original story into an
easy-to-read tale that, nonetheless, would still keep the spirit in Kipling’s
work.

In the middle of a world in constant and exponential convulsion, a
serene thought allows me to reach a hopeful conclusion about the future: if
there is a better tomorrow (I believe there is), it lies within the small
people, who should receive the best in each one of us. Their accomplishments
will depend –largely– on their parent’s efforts and abilities in giving them a
family culture that favours healthy minds and free spirits. In short, all that
doesn’t abound in our current and sophisticated adult reality.

to anyone who could guarantee him/her the ability of knowing other people’s
deepest thoughts. But this gift has existed –through reading– for thousands of
years. What is becoming scarcer is the interest in reading, although access to
information and culture grows everyday. Time is also scarce in inverse
proportion.

I’m happy to share with all the readers this
story written by Charles Kingsley, published in 1863 for the first time. Since
it first saw the light, it became a very popular book in the United Kingdom. It
was considered a classic among children’s books from the Victorian Era and it
didn’t lose popularity until well into the beginning of the 20th century.
